Substations are the main element of the energy infrastructure, ensuring the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. Thanks to modern technologies and innovations, substations have significantly developed, becoming key components for the electricity supply of industrial, commercial, and residential facilities.

What is a substation?

A transformer substation is a specialized structure or installation that receives high-voltage electricity, transforms it to the required level, and transmits it to consumers. It consists of the following main components:

  • Power transformer.
  • Switchgear devices.
  • Automation and protection systems.

Main types of transformer substations

The classification of substations depends on their purpose, design features, and operating conditions.

  1. Complete transformer substation (CTS) This is a compact piece of equipment that includes all necessary elements for transforming and distributing electricity. CTS are widely used for electricity supply in residential areas, industrial facilities, agricultural enterprises, and other infrastructure objects.
  2. Mast-type transformer substation It is installed on a special metal or concrete mast. This type of substation is optimal for small settlements, agricultural facilities, or enterprises where minimal equipment is required.
  3. Pole-type transformer substation Similar in design to the mast-type, but it can be installed on one or several supports for greater stability. Pole-type transformer substations are usually used in rural areas for local electricity distribution.
  4. Block-modular complete transformer substation (CTS-BM) The body of such a substation consists of separate modules (blocks) installed on a foundation.
  5. Complete transformer substations in concrete shells (CTSC). Designed for use in electricity supply systems of urban and industrial facilities, as well as areas with individual housing, cottage settlements, etc.

Classification of transformer substations

  1. By purpose:
    • Distribution – for transmitting electricity to consumers.
    • Industrial – for providing power to manufacturing equipment.
    • Special-purpose – for use in mining, transportation, etc.
  2. By installation type:
    • Outdoor – located in the open air.
    • Indoor – installed inside buildings or special containers.
  3. By construction:
    • Mast and pole-type.
    • Ground-mounted (CTS, BKTS).
  4. By voltage level:
    • Low voltage substations.
    • Medium and high voltage substations.

Areas of use for substations

Transformer substations are used in various industries:

  • Residential construction. Ensuring stable electricity supply to apartment buildings, cottages, and settlements.
  • Industrial enterprises. Powering equipment and technological processes.
  • Agriculture. Power supply to farms, greenhouses, pump stations.
  • Infrastructure facilities. Power supply to roads, train stations, airports.
  • Renewable energy sources. Integration into solar and wind power station systems.
